George Land is an author, speaker, consultant, and general systems scientist with a broad and varied background in communications, business, education, and government. In 1958, when he was serving as chief executive of an international television network, he began investigations into stimulating and directing creativity. The encouraging results of those efforts led to his founding, in Cambridge and New York, Innotek Corporation, a research and consulting institute to further the knowledge about the enhancement of creative performance. This research ultimately led to the formulation of his Transformation Theory, a theory of transformation that integrates principles of creativity, growth, and change.

History of Money, Lecture 30, Pt. B: the Federal Reserve Act of 1913 actually got its start three years earlier, at a clubhouse at Jekyll Island, Georgia, in November 1910. The Jekyll Island Club was the site of a secret meeting of the nation's top bankers and financiers to hammer the details of a central bank for the United States. Shortly after the meeting, Senator Nelson Aldrich introduced his plan for a "National Reserve Association." The plan was initially shot down by the Democrats, who were currently investigating the Money Trust in the Pujo Committee (spawned by a resolution from Charles A. Lindbergh, a vocal critic of the Aldrich bill). However, after the election of Woodrow Wilson in 1912, the plan, after undergoing some revision, passed Congress and received the President's signature on December 23, 1913: the birthdate of the Federal Reserve System. Attendees at the storied Jekyll Island meeting included: Henry P. Davison (senior partner at J. P. Morgan & Co.); Charles D. Norton (president of First National Bank of New York); Benjamin Strong, Jr. (vice president of Bankers Trust of New York); Paul Warburg (representative of Kuhn, Loeb & Co. and director at Wells Fargo); Frank A. Vanderlip (president of National City Bank of New York [citibank]); Senator Nelson Aldrich; and A. Piatt Andrew, university economist.

California and Arizona are currently fighting each other over water. But this isn’t new – it’s actually been going on for over 100 years. At one point, the states literally went to war about it. The problem comes down to some really bad math from 1922.

To some extent, the crisis can be blamed on climate change. The West is in the middle of a once-in-a-millennium drought. As temperatures rise, the snow pack that feeds the river has gotten much thinner and the river’s main reservoirs have all but dried up. But that’s only part of the story.

The United States has also been overusing the Colorado for more than a century thanks to a byzantine set of flawed laws and lawsuits known as “the law of the river.” This legal tangle not only has been over-allocating the river, it also has been driving conflict in the region, especially between the two biggest users: California and Arizona, both trying to secure as much water as they can. And now, as a massive drought grips the region, the law of the river has reached a breaking point.
